New 34th District Court Building Under Construction
The 34th District Court, located in Romulus Michigan, is one very busy courthouse and has outgrown its 26,000-square-foot building current.
The 34th District Court services the cities of Romulus and Belleville, and the Townships of Sumpter, Van Buren and Huron, handling a load of more than 87,000 cases in 2017.
Traffic tickets and violations make up the majority of this case load – representing approximately 75% of the cases held in 34th District Court in most years.
According to the 34th District Court’s 2015 Caseload Report, the total number of traffic cases handled that year was:
- Parking 3,401

New 34th District Court Completion August 2019
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new and improved 34th District Court building took place on April 23 and completion of the Court house is anticipated by August of 2019.
The new building will be located just west of the current courthouse. The facility will be a two-story, 50,000-square-foot building – almost doubling the size of the current 34th District Court.
Building this 34th District Court building is the largest public project in the history of the Romulus.
Traffic Tickets Pay for New 34th District Court
There will be no additional cost to taxpayers, for the new $17 million building, as it is being paid for largely by traffic ticket revenue.
About five years ago, the 34th District Court began assessing a $20 fee per ticket to be applied to debt reduction on the bonds that will finance the project.
So if you have received a traffic ticket in the 34th District Court in the last 5 years, you have actually helped to pay for the new building!
Paying a traffic ticket, or going to court, is never a fun experience. But it should be a bit more pleasant once the new 34th District Court Building is open for business.
Currently, cramped facilities – including some employees working out of hallways and closets – has led to inefficiencies, delays and an overall unpleasant experience. The new courthouse, however will offer energy efficient, high tech, state-of-the-art facilities for the public and the 45 Court employees.
